Sweet Craving?

The following foods will help you fight sweet craving:

    Use as often as you like
  • Cabbage
  • Onions
  • Chestnuts 
  • Pumpkin

Use as often as you like

  • Carrots
  • Parsnip 
  • White radish

Use a little 1 to 3 times a week

  • Amasake
  • Barley malt syrup
  • Brown rice syrup
  • Freshly squeezed hot apple juice

  • White and Brown sugar

Macrobiotic Diet Recipes: Tofu cheesecake

Macrobiotic Tofu Cheesecake
Make sure your pie shell is NOT non-stick

Tofu dictionary definition:

"A soft, white food made from soybeans and often used in vegetarian cooking instead of meat".

A thorough analysis of twenty eight studies on Chinese adults has shown that the absorption of tofu reduces the risk of at least one cancer type (stomach cancer) than intake of soy in general.

Ingredients 

Choose organic ingredients whenever possible.

The Crust:

  • 1/2 cup of rice or barley malt syrup
  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup of deodorized olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt 
  • Thoroughly mix the lot to form a dough

The Filling:

  • 1 lb (450 grams) of extra hard tofu
  • 1/2 cup of brown rice or barley malt syrup 
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla 
  • 1/4 cup of tahini
  • 1/2 cup of either cranberries, raspberries or strawberries  jam unsweetened (use St Dalfour jam)
  • zest of one lemon grated (this has to be organic)
  • Blend the lot in a food processor 
  • Add a little water if too dry

Recipe

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees 
  • Lightly oil the bottom of a pie shell
  • Press "The crust" to cover the bottom and sides of the pie shell
  • Poke some holes in the paste 
  • Bake in the oven for 10 minutes
  • Remove from the oven and add "The Filling"
  • Decorate the top with fresh berries of your liking 
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until the tofu mixture is golden brown 
  • Remove from oven, allow to cool down and enjoy

Tarte Tatin

Tarte Tatin

The Crust

  • 1/2 cup of rice or barley malt syrup
  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup of deodorized olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt 
  • Thoroughly mix the lot to form a dough

The Filling

Use organic ingredients if you can. Your body will thank you for this.

  • 4 peeled and sliced apples
  • One pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of deodorized olive oil 
  • 1/2 cup of brown rice or barley malt syrup

Recipe:

  • Preheat the oven at 350 degrees 
  • Press "The crust" to cover the bottom and sides of a pie shell (do not use a non-stick pie shell)
  • Poke some holes in the paste 
  • Bake in the oven for 10 minutes
  • Remove "The Crust" from the oven and add the following  "Filling"
  • Thoroughly mix the syrup with the oil and the apples, and carefully add on top of "The Crust" 
  • Place in the oven and cook until the apples turn brown and caramelized (about 25 minutes) - keep an eye on it
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes  before serving

Macrobiotic Diet Recipes: Carrot Cake

Carrot cake

Ingredients 

Use organic ingredients if possible

  • 2 cups of wholewheat flour 
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup of dry raisins soaked
  • 1/2 cup of deodorized olive oil
  • 1/2 cup rice milk
  • 1 cup brown rice syrup
  • the rind from one orange or lemon - make sure it is organic, if not skip this
  • 2 cups of finely shredded carrots
  • 1/2 a cup of grinded almonds

Recipe

  • Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees
  • Thoroughly mix the carrots with the flour
  • Mix the following together: cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, salt, raisins, orange (or lemon) rind and almonds  
  • Mix the oil, rice milk, brown rice syrup separately
  • Mix both together 
  • Add a little oil to your cake pan and add the above mixture to your pan
  • Bake until brown and beginning to detach from the sides of the cake pan  (about 40 minutes) 

Macrobiotic Diet Recipes: Sweet Kuzu

Kuzu is sometimes also spelt Kudzu is a fast-growing Chinese and Japanese climbing vine of the legume family, now widespread in the southern U.S.

It can be used as a thickening agent in place of cornstarch or arrowroot powder

Benefits of Kuzu:

  • reduce high blood pressure
  • help heal the organs damaged by alcoholism
  • relieve chronic migraines 
  • reduce the risk of blood clots
  • lower cholesterol
  • ease aches in the shoulders and neck 
  • protect against heart disease

Recipe

  • Dissolve 1 tablespoon of kuzu in a small amount of filtered or spring water
  • Place in a saucepan
  • Add 1 cup of filtered or spring water
  • Add 1 tablespoon of brown rice syrup or barley syrup
  • Stir over a medium flame until it thickens
  • Allow to cool a bit and enjoy
